This homemade costume for families entered our 2022 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Alicia, the 'The Flintstones' costume creator:

Every year I make my family’s Halloween costume ensemble from primarily felt and hot glue. The idea for the Flintstones had been lingering for a while and each year a decision is made based on the size of the kids and how well it would work for the ensemble. This year my oldest daughter is 8 and served as “my apprentice,” helping a lot with cutting and even some hot gluing. We had a great time listening to music and thinking about the designs and working on them.

Fred, Wilma and Dino's hats were all made on thrifted baseball caps with the bill removed.

Fred’s outfit and tie are all felt.

Wilma’s dress is built on a one shoulder swimsuit and has hundreds of individual pieces attached to create the right shape. An elastic belt covered in felt was used to help pull the waist in and help to keep the dress up since it was quite heavy!

Dino was constructed in an old large mess t shirt and pool
Noodles were used for line the seams and create the belly. A wire hanger and another pool noodle were used to create the tail which actually wagged side to side when she walked. The only thing sewn in the ensemble is the Dino side seams because I was worried about their integrity with just glue, everything else is held together with hot glue.

Pebbles was constructed on a tank top and shorts and just overlayed a few layers of felt for stiffness. Light sticks necklaces were glued into the hem of the shirt to give it the round shape.

We had a great time conceptualizing how this would come together, obviously there are no patterns and trying to make a 2D cartoon look right on a real person is always a challenge. I tried to be as faithful to the cartoon show as I could. I had several redos of Fred’s hair, Wilma’s hair and Wilma’s dress, everything else came together as we expected the first try!

Unfortunately, Halloween in our neck of the woods was quite wet and cold, but we ventured out for a bit nonetheless.

Happy Halloween!
