A word from Andy, the 'Pope Francis' costume creator:
My six year old son is wearing an original, hand- and machine-sewn costume. Looked up various pictures of Pope Francis online to replicate as accurate as possible (including the upper sleeve buttons). Iron on Velcro was used to secure front of robe and neck collar.
Fabric cost was roughly $30; cross was purchased online for $15; hat (kippah) purchased online for $5; Velcro $7.
Used an old basket with a wine cork sewn through it, green felt sheet glued on the inside, and a piece of pvc pipe as tithing basket that is typically used in mass for the offerings (money). Used white color hairspray and old eyeglasses without lenses.
Total time to complete was about 12 hours.
