R2-D2 and Princess Leia StarWars Movie Costumes

If your usual Halloween attire involves a faded sheet with holes cut out for your eyes, then it sounds like you need a little help coming up with some fresh, new costume ideas. And some of the best are those who base their disguises on movie character Halloween costume ideas.

Look around any Halloween party and you'll see that half the people there are dressed in generic costumes – vampires, zombies, werewolves, or super heroes. It's the people who dress like a specific character who get the most attention. Think about it. Which costume would get you to sit up and take notice? Someone dressed as a generic vampire with a plastic cape and fangs? Or someone decked out in a full Buffy The Vampire Slayer costume?

Theme parties are always popular and people are always hosting 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' parties or 'Roman Holiday' parties throughout the year. If you base your costume on movie character Halloween costume ideas then you'll get double-duty. You can wear it to the 'Rocky Horror' party your friends have during the summer and use it again for Halloween.

But where do you get the ideas?
More important, where do you get the costumes?

The ideas can come from anywhere – just turn to the Internet, for starters. Choose from current, popular movies like 'Hunger Games' or 'Twilight'. And this year, dressing up as a character from 'Titanic' will be extremely popular because this is the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.

Look to old-time favorites and classics, too. The Wizard of Oz is filled with iconic characters and if you can't come up with some good movie character costume ideas after you watch 'Gone With The Wind' then you just have no imagination.

The Wizard of Oz Costume Idea for Families

Almost every single movie ever made has at least one recognizable, central character that would make a perfect model for your Halloween costume so start listing your favorite movies and see where it leads you.

As for finding or creating the costumes, that's easy, too. Visit online costume shops and you'll find favorites like Captain Jack Sparrow or Freddy Krueger and dozens of other movie characters. If you don't have a specific character in mind you can get a Can-Can Girl costume and go as one of the dancers from 'Moulin Rouge' or get a Chain Gang costume and go as one of the characters from 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'

If you don't want to buy a costume check out some of the online costume rental sites where you'll find hundreds of movie character costume ideas. Go to that party as Kermit the Frog or Miss Piggy, Marilyn Monroe or Clark Gable. Just be sure to reserve your costume early before someone else beats you to it.

The best way to really 'get into character' is to make your costume yourself. These days there's a thrift store on every corner with a dollar store right next door. Do some browsing through both and you'll be able to come up with everything you need to make your movie character costume ideas a reality.

We'd love to see your creative costumes in our gallery! Submit your costume photo, and enter our Halloween costume contest this year!
