Look around any Halloween party and you'll see that half the people there are dressed in generic costumes – vampires, zombies, werewolves, or super heroes. It's the people who dress like a specific character who get the most attention. Think about it. Which costume would get you to sit up and take notice? If you don't have a specific character in mind you can get a Can-Can Girl costume and go as one of the dancers from 'Moulin Rouge' or get a Chain Gang costume and go as one of the characters from 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'
If you don't want to buy a costume check out some of the online costume rental sites where you'll find hundreds of movie character costume ideas. Go to that party as Kermit the Frog or Miss Piggy, Marilyn Monroe or Clark Gable. Just be sure to reserve your costume early before someone else beats you to it.
The best way to really 'get into character' is to make your costume yourself. These days there's a thrift store on every corner with a dollar store right next door.
