This homemade costume for groups entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Ami, the 'Holy Ark' costume creator:
My 10 year old son and his 3 class mates decided to choose a costume with a historical/religious twist and decided to dress up as priests (Levites) carrying the holy ark.
Using a hot glue gun I coated a nice size box with metallic gold cardboard and then made a cardboard cover for the box which I also coated.
For the carrying poles, I used two old broom sticks which I also wrapped in gold paper and then fastened the gold paper around the sticks by wrapping around regular clear scotch tape.
The poles were inserted into rings that were made from cardboard and then coated in gold paper. The rings were glued and screwed to the ark.
Then I made the two angels (Cherubim). I used two old male (ken) Barbie dolls and spray painted them gold. The dolls' knees were bent forcefully backwards and screwed at a 90 degree angle so it would look like the angels are kneeling. Then the angels were glued and screwed to the cover of the ark facing each other.
The wings were cut out of cardboard and coated with gold paper and then screwed on to the back of the dolls. To make sure the wings were stable, I screwed the wings to each other at the meeting point over the ark.
For each kid I sewed a white garment with a matching head cover (using one of those cheap hand sewing machine I bought on the web) and added a strip of wine colored cloth for both the belt and head cover.
Added a white beard and…..Done !
Overall the costume was very light and very comfortable to carry. And the boys had a great time.
The morning they got dressed up at school I dropped them off a half a mile away from the school so that they can march down the sidewalk with the ark and show off their costume. It was a hit ! they got so much attention !
