A word from Villa, the 'Genie on her Magic Carpet' costume creator:

I wanted a flying illusion costume this year. I went with a magic carpet theme. I participated in the J and A Wicked 10k in it. I completed 6.2 miles in windy conditions along the Va Beach oceanfront. It came complete with a sound system (back corner of the magic carpet) and magic lamp. Even though I went through a lot of tough windy spots, the costume held up! It was a crowd favorite! I made it with a large piece of cardboard. I covered it with a very cool piece of fabric. I used tinsel for the carpet edging in the front and the back. There was a hole cut out near the back that my body fit into. Underneath, there were 2 long pieces of wood to keep it from bending. The legs were made by using flesh colored hose and stuffing with fluff. I found a pair of belly dance pants that held the stuffed hose and created the realistic illusion of legs that were crossed. I used a lot of hot glue and 2-sided fabric tape to hold everything down and to hold the legs in place. The shoes were a pair of slip-on shoes that I spray painted gold and hot glued onto the feet. I hot glued a genie lamp onto the carpet with a small piece of fluff hot glued to look like smoke was coming out of the lamp. I attached Velcro to one side of the pants top so I could put it around my waist and attach it to the other side to make it look like it was part of my body. The bottom (to cover my lower body, legs and feet) was created using 4 yards of very light blue fabric that sparkled. It was the perfect color. I attached it to the bottom of the flying carpet using hot glue. After it was done, I finished off the the bottom fabric by using fluff for clouds to make it look like I was floating in the sky. This costume was somewhat on the tougher side to make but it was very popular before, during and after the 10k that day.
