A word from Carrie, the 'Beautiful Butterfly' costume creator:
My daughter wanted to go as a big, beautiful butterfly this year! We pieced together her outfit with leggings and leg warmers we already had on hand. I hand stitched on her shirt rows of fringe to simulate an insects body and a fur trimmed collar.
Her antennas were fashioned with flower wire and an old headband - I teased her hair around her face to hide the band.
Her wings were made with poster board, an old hanger and iridescent cellophane. I drew my design on the poster board and carefully cut it out - spray glued the entire side and placed a layer of cellophane down. I repeated it on the opposite side and for the other wing as well. Afterwards I ran my warm iron over the sections to fuse it together even more and give it that "veiny" look. I ran the hanger and some jewelry wire along the top of the wings for stabilization.
It was quite a windy night on Halloween but the wings survived and were a huge hit! She was definitely the only one of her kind on the sidewalks that night and it was beyond fun putting this together with my sweet girl!
