This homemade costume for boys entered our 2023 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Shari, the 'Amethyst Geode' costume creator:

Our gem obsessed son Benny is the one who came up with the idea. “I want to be a Geode”, he said. We looked online to see if anyone had made this costume before and we only found one person who used paper mache to create the geode. We decided to use paper mache and create our own version of this costume.

How to instructions:
Step 1. Wrap an exercise ball/large beach ball in plastic wrap.
Step 2. Mix Elmers glue and water to create mache. Use strips of news paper dipped in glue/water mix and cover ball. Let it dry. Apply 2 more layers leaving a small hole at the top and bottom.
Step 3. Once all dry, deflate and remove the ball. Carefully push in one side of the sphere to create an indent. Cut out arm and head holes. Add one more layer of paper mache to make sure the whole thing is sturdy. Let dry.
Step 4. Spray paint the whole thing black or grey and the indented part silver. Then spray the whole thing with clear sparkle spray paint.
Step 5. Hot glue plastic gems on the Geode. Use clear gems for the outside layer and purple for the inside.

I love this!!! Good job. Really creative and unique. Kudos to your kid for thinking outside the box. My family and I are the dandelions family if you check ours out. Yours is the only costume I have voted for - it is the best I've seen!

I have voted for you a bunch now and even though Halloween is over I think I might make this for my 3 year old just for funsies! I'm in love. Might use matte black or charcoal and then a sponge to create a rock look for the outside. I'm so glad you gave your steps! Where did you find the gems? How many did you order? Jenniferannburton[at]yahoo.com if you have any tips!!

Jennifer, I don't know what this maker used, but when I made an amethyst geode costume for my daughter 4 years ago, I used these in purple and white. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014I5DZ1S/
