A word from Roxanne, the 'The Lego Movie Family' costume creator:
My husband and I have done family theme costumes since having kids(this is our forth year!) My kids(3 and 4) still haven't objected to my family theme costume craze ideas. I hope to keep this up until they become "too cool" for it!
My kids are obsessed with Legos. What kid isn't? After watching The Lego Movie for the third time in three days, I suggested the Lego costume idea to my boys. They jumped with joy! There wasn't even any arguing over their quickly chosen movie characters! My previous and my much simpler idea of "Peter Pan" costumes flew out the window and was long forgotten.
I started a search on "DIY lego costumes." After a few minutes of searching, I realized the trouble I may have gotten myself into. "I'm not that crafty and I don't know how to sew, but I can (decently) follow instructions!" I thought!
I found several tutorials online, gathered up my ideas and supplies.
The Lego bodies were simple. Cardboard boxes and paint! I measured, cut, glued and taped the body box. I then spray painted them and drew/painted the outfit with acrylic paint. The heads were a bit harder to make. They consisted of cement form tubes, foam wreath tubes, polystyrene sheets and spray paint. I had my husband cut the cement form tubes. I then glued(low temp glue gun) the sanded down wreath tube on the bottom of the heads to create the curved Lego head look. I did the same with the top of the heads. For extra security and smoother look, I taped the tube and bottom wreath together. The next step was spray painting the heads. After I let them dry over night, I carefully carved out the eye holes with an Xacto knife. Then I traced out the facial expressions on card stock. The mouths and facial expressions are not drawn on. They're actually stock paper. I figured that would give the heads a cleaner look. For the inside of the heads, I glued on speaker fabric for the eyes. I also secured the inside of the heads with poly foam to keep them from being wobbly and moving around.
The Lego hair and hat...well that was the hardest part! I had a hard time finding suggestions online since most Lego head tutorials I found were topped with the classic Lego stub. I thought about creating them with paper mâché, plaster or foam.
My husband had purchased plenty of polystyrene foam sheets from Home Depot, so I decided to give that a try. It WORKED. I glued and stacked up several sheets together. Then, I carved and sanded them to form the appropriate shape(Emmet's hat, Wyldstyle's hair and President Business' hair.) For Benny the astronaut, I found a perfect sized, half shaped ball. They were all coated with smooth finish(no coating for Benny) and painted with acrylic paint. The entire hair part was time consuming, but I was pleased and much surprised with the end results.
We went to a boo bash, boo at the zoo and trick or treating. People loved us! We were constantly stopped and asked to pose for photos and selfies with kids and adults. We often got asked how we made the costumes. Several people showed off their vocal talents while randomly singing, "Everything is Awesome," The Lego Movie song, when they saw us! Everything about the reactions was awesome too!
We plan on using our costumes for my son's upcoming 5th LEGO themed birthday party! I'm sure the party guests will love them! These costumes were 100% homemade. My friends and family suggested we enter contests, so here we are! We didn't partake in any local ones. It took lots of time and effort to make these, but the results and experience was awesome! We're that family with Lego mini-fig head family decals on the back of our car, so this was perfect for us!
