A word from Amy, the 'The Mad Hatter' costume creator:
This was my son's Halloween Costume last year. He was the Mad Hatter. We found the pants, jacket and shirt at Goodwill. The paints were a little longer than I wanted so I shorted up the bottoms. For the Hat I made a base out of poster board big enough to fit his head and a round piece of cardboard for the top. For the rim I made a circle out of wire hangers and then shaped it to look the the rim of the mad hatters hat. Then with the help of some hot glue I covered the whole thing in fabric. I got some shiny fabric in a contrasting color and sewed it around the base of the hat and then made a 10/6 out of poster board and tucked it into place. For his hair we already had a whit wig from when my younger son had been Santa Claus for Halloween the previous year so we used that. For the Bow Tie I got some polka dot ribbon and made a bow. It wasn't quite large enough so I ended up sewing 3 strips together and then made another bow and that one was perfect! Then I bought some bias tape in a matching color and attached the bow to it and then sewed a couple of hook and eyes to the back so we could secure it around his neck. For the vest I took an old t-shirt of my son's and cut it into the shape of a vest and then used that as a pattern to make a vest out of green fabric. Then I finally figured out how to sew button holes with my sewing machine after having it for 7 years! I added the button holes and green buttons and the costume was complete!
