This homemade costume for babies entered our 2013 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Kristina, the 'Baby Grandma' costume creator:

This year we dressed my one year old daughter as a little old grandma. We handmade her walker out of a PVC pipe cut down (about $5 for the pipe and joints) then spray painted it silver to look like metal. We bought wheels and tennis balls to fit on the ends (about $5). I bought a stein of gray yarn ($1.50) and stitched it to a knit hat ($.87) to keep shape and stretch to fit. Made a simple skirt from discount fabric (1/2 yard-$.50) and elastic. (About $13) We put it all together and got one adorable miniature grandma! Mommy and daddy dressed in scrubs as her nurses to complete the look! ($24 for 2 sets but you can get them at a discount or thrift store for cheaper!)

Thanks for all the comments!

The walker size is just based on your child's size. Approximately 16 inches tall by 12 inches wide, to give you an idea. Whatever size you do, make sure you cut all the pieces for both sides the same length or the walker will sit crooked and not roll correctly.

I used 1 inch diameter pvc. All pvc, joints and wheels were bought at lowes.

How was she able to connect the wheels to the PVC pipe?

#11 comment by Kristina Beasley October 22, 2015

The wheels have a piece that fit into the end of the pvc pipe, but I also glued them in just in case.

Did you cut all four legs the same length? The Ines with the wheels are the same length as the ones with the tennis balls?

#13 comment by Kristina Beasley October 29, 2015

Yes all the same length, however it really doesn't matter, it'll still move just fine either way. It is not made to hold weight, it is only pvc.

I love this! She is so cute! I'm planning to make something like this for my 15 month old daughter this year. Can you tell me a little more detail on how you stitched the yarn to the hat? That is the part I'm struggling with the most!
Thanks so much!

#15 comment by Kristina October 8, 2016

I actually stitched across the yarn to hold it together then hot glued the while thing to the hat.

Do you have directions on how you did the yarn wig? could you email them to me or put them on here? would really love to do this with my girl but am not sure where to start. Thank you!

I'm making this for my son this year . I'm having a hard time making the walker .. How many pieces did you get ? Can I see the list of everything I need for the Walker please ?

#18 comment by Kristina October 17, 2016

We got like 3 long pieces of pvc in the small size and cut them down. Also bought corner and joint pvc pieces, 2 tennis balls and set of wheels that fit into the end of the pvc. I just kind of figured it out and drew it all up... I 'm sorry I don't know all the specifics, it's been like 3 years. Hope this helps.

What kind of wheels are they? Brand?

#20 comment by Melissa October 10, 2017

Hi there
Would you mind helping with some of the specifics on how you built the walker? Specifically how you attached everything

Thank you

Where did you get the wheels from?
