This homemade costume for girls entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Sylvia, the 'Ursula the Sea Witch' costume creator:

This year I purchased a dress and black gloves from Goodwill and created an Ursula the Sea Witch costume for my daughter Sage.

I sewed the dress to make it fit and created the tentacles from scrap material then used pillow stuffing which is cheaper. I used felt and diamonds for the suction cups on the tentacles. They each have V shaped coils to make them curl and I hand sewed each tentacle and the eels (flotsam and jetsam) onto the dress. Wire hangers would also work. The staff and crown were also hand made using foam craft paper, cardboard in between and rolls of diamond strips and real shells.

The eyes on the eel light up also. I cut dollar store eyeballs in half and glued a "U" leaving the top open to be able to insert a balloon light bulb into the yellow eyes which I painted with a yellow marker. Lights can be bought on ebay cheap or Party City too. I bought yellow ones from ebay.

The necklace was hand made with oven clay purchased at Hobby Lobby and hot glued onto a ribbon with Velcro. Different versions were made to also light up with a balloon light.

Hi there!
What and where are these V shaped coils you used found?
Thank you!

Hi! The Coils are actually wire that I purchased from Hobby Lobby. It comes in coils. I cut them to size and created a V shape then stuffed them inside each tentacle. I will say that they didn't remain upright (too heavy) and I had to sew the tentacle tips to the dress. In the end it was comfortable to wear though!

Did you sew tentacles to the bottom of the dress? Or have them come from waist down?

#5 comment by Sylvia LaBoy October 22, 2019

Hi Holly,
The dress was sewn by hand, the tentacles were hot glued! I "rigged" the costume to work, it is not professional although it looked great! After a few wears the tentacles started to come apart and it is not in sellable condition. I can help with any info you need!

Hi Amber,
I hot glued each tentacle to the bottom of the dress. A hula hoop is hot glued to the dress bottom to maintain the circle shape. The tentacle ends (small tips) were hand sewn to the body of the dress because the wiring did not hold them up as I first thought. They laid flat to the ground even with wires. There are V shaped wires inside the tentacles which helped create the twisted look.

Ursula has only 6 tentacles.

Love this, wish I had seen this before making it myself! I was literally sewing last bits of the costume while my 3 yr old was wearing it, definitely not easy! I love the hula hoop idea, but how in the world did you get it to be strapless without her dress falling down from the weight? I ended up making a strap on one side it would hold up, so it looked like an updated fashion runway Ursula lol

Hi Nora, thank you for the nice comment! I had the same issue, it was too heavy to hold up. See the eel over her shoulder? That wasn't intended at first. The eel is her strap and I really liked how it looked.

Zabby, I liked the thinner tentacle look. 6 tentacles on that diameter wouldn't have looked as good. I also had an Ursula wig but with my daughter's long locks it didn't look good so I skipped it.

If anyone needs pictures or other instructions (these were short) reach me at sylviagarcia1975[at]yahoo.com.
Thanks!!

This is amazing! What size is it, and would you be willing to sell it? I am a talent coach and need one for a student who is performing "Poor Unfortunate Souls" for an upcoming recital. She is a size 7/8 or Youth Medium.
