A word from Deanna, the 'The Muppets' costume creator:

We love old school shows! The Muppets are a favorite in our household. I went in search of costumes for our family to carry out this theme, but had no luck. So, I decided to make them! I knew painted faces wouldn't do the trick, so I thought about paper mache...making heads for us to wear. I used flour and water, blew up 5 balloons and proceeded to rip newspaper into strips and build up each head. This process is messy and it takes a day or more to dry. Then you have to do another layer because it has to be sturdy. I went to the store and bought fabric that I thought resembled each characteristic of the 5 Muppets. I bought a wig and pig nose from the store to glue onto Miss Piggy's head. I used a white foam material for her ears and covered them with material. I applied actual blush to the material for her cheeks. Her eyes were made from felt, a black feather was cut to make her eyelashes, and felt was used for her tongue. Everything was hot glued on. I already owned gloves, her dress, shoes, boa and tights so that part was easy. For Kermit, I painted styrafoam balls that I cut in half and glued black felt onto the balls for his eyes. I used felt for the mouth and covered it with green fabric. I used felt to make the collar and to make the feet/cover his shoes. I got his shirt and pants from a second hand store. For Animal, I had styrafoam balls that I painted for the eyes, I used a red sock and covered/glued it to a styrafoam ball, used foam board to cut out teeth, multi-colored yarn to create a beard, boas for the eyelashes and hair. I got a chain at a store, cut some rope for the belt that I had at home, bought second-hand clothes that I cut for the outfit. I got orange gloves for her hands, and long orange socks for her feet (I covered up her shoes.) Gonzo (my costume) was two shades of blue felt, styrafoam painted white for the eyes and felt to create the eyelids and eyeballs, pipe cleaners for the random hairs on top, red felt for the mouth, and I cut up an old viking helmet (one of the horns) and covered it with felt for the nose. I borrowed a tie from my husband and bought some clothes from a second hand store. For Fozzy, I made a brown, fuzzy body suit for my husband to wear. He had an old had that I glued onto the head. I cut out material for his bow and sewed it loosely. His eyes and nose were painted styrafoam balls. The eyes have felt on it for the eyeballs and eyelids. The eyebrows are just strips of the same fuzzy material that I used for the body. Felt was used for the mouth. We used a pillow to create a tummy for him. And there you have it! My creation of The Muppets! I probably spent somewhere in the range of $150 in total. :)
