This homemade costume for boys entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Katrina, the 'Refrigerator' costume creator:

My 6 year old son is wearing this costume cut from a large sheet of styrofoam from the hardware store. All of the food packaging inside (and the egg shells) are real ,but empty of course. The food on the inside of the door was half painted, half cut from real packaging. All of the photos, magnets, and drawings are also real and glued on. The coils on the back are just tin foil and the plug cord was cut from an old blender. The door opens so is held shut with velcro. :) The cost was about $15, but it depends on the materials you have. I already had much of the paint and used food packaging I would have otherwise thrown away.

Do you still have this costume?

Unfortunately not :( I moved out of the country last year and had to get rid of anything unnecessary. I totally regret not having someone hang onto it!!

So.... how did you attach the doors so they would open and close without crumpling the styrofoam?

Wow, I am going to have to try to remember!! I THINK I just used duct tape and painted over it white. If you look at the picture with the door closed you can kind of see it. The door panel is on the inner side of the panel to the left (but over top of the panel on the right side). Then you can see I just sort of taped it over with something flexible and painted it white.
