This homemade costume for boys entered our 2018 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Steve, the 'Plants vs Zombies Chomper' costume creator:

My son, JJ (9), is wearing this hand made Chomper costume based on the character from the Plants vs Zombies mobile game.

THE HEAD:
The head was made out of paper mache (5layers) using an oversized beach ball which was then deflated and pulled out. A small section was then cut out and a pool noodle was inserted to make the lips. The teeth and spikes were cut out of foam sheets and hot glued. The leaves around the base of the head were cut from foam sheets and painted green. This ended being a very light-weight mask (just over 3 lbs)

BODY (only item not custom made)
Lycra bodysuit purchased at costume shop.

ANKLE LEAVES
The leaves around the ankles were cut from foam sheets and spray painted neon green.

I used a 16" beach ball. It was $5 on Amazon.

In the process of making this.... What did you use for the tongue??

Thanks for the help! I'm making this as we speak! Someone asked about the tongue- I think I may use some panty hose and stuff it with paper... or maybe stuff a plastic bag and tape it like a tongue...? Not sure. Good luck!

The tongue was probably the most fun. I use a piece of this craft foam, rolled it into a cone the hit glued it to hold its shape. I the stuffed it with plastic bags and used a metal coat hanger inside it to help bend the tongue to the desired shape.
To finish I grabbed a piece of fabric from A craft store. Luckily I found one that looked like a tongue texture and worked perfectly.

Then just hot glue the tongue to the mouth. It takes some playing around with until you find the right spot.
