A word from Sarena, the 'Mermaid lost at Sea' costume creator:

This year I decided to be a Mermaid Lost at Sea. Everything head to toe was handmade. Time consuming? yes, but in the end was totally worth it to see everyones reaction.

Starting with the anchor I followed a picture off google and drew it on to foam and carved out. The chains I found cheap plastic ones at the dollar store. I wanted the anchor to look as really and heavy as possible so i sprayed it with a “stone effect” spray paint, brown spray paint and added cinnamon to spots all over to make it look like rust. It looked super realistic.

The staff was made of a large bamboo stick, fishnet and fake moss from Michael's, seashells from the Dollar Store and handmade barnacles. The top is a christmas globe also from Michael's and inside i had an led fibre light hair clip glue into a big shell to look like a jelly fish was floating inside.

For the top and the bottom I used a spandex material a simple tube top for the top and a mermaid shape silhouette for the bottom. I made and painted every barnacle, coral and starfish you see on this costume, They were all made a kids Model Magic air dry clay (which is super lightweight) I shaped, molded and carved them. Painted with acrylic paint then coated with clear nail polish to give a more dewy look to them. I attached fishnet, moss and all my hand made items all over the costume to look like i’ve been lost so long that they were attaching and growing on my body.

I knew this look was going to be heavily makeup based so I watched a tutorial by the oh so talented Jordan Hanz on youtube to draw my inspiration from. I used Mehrons body paint for the base a mix of white and teal. I used cream paint to highlight/ add texture and a mix of eyeshadows to contour. I glued on barnacles, moss and starfish I made with a skin adhesive. popped in Sclera lenses and some fake lashes to finish the look.

I hope this helped anyone who wants to try this and I hope you enjoy!
