This homemade costume for boys entered our 2016 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Jessica, the 'Mega Charizard X' costume creator:
My sons requested Pokémon costumes this year as they are in love with all things Pokémon. I let them choose their characters and we went from there. There were no patterns to be found so we printed some pictures of the characters from the internet and created from scratch.
Halloween here can be cold (or hot as it is this year) and we wanted a hearty material to add some bulk. Dragons are not flimsy! Mega Charizard X is made completely from fleece (plus hardware for the wings). We started by making the hat. I wanted something that could be worn anytime so it goes from costume to winter fashion. I am sure this hat will get a lot of use. The feet are made from an old pair of ragged shoes saved from the garbage pile and covered with fleece using hot glue. Very simple.
The wings were more complex. "Make big wings mom" were my only instructions. Message received. I started with cutting the fleece in the shape we wanted. Then I used wire hangers (straightened then molded) to created a frame for the fleece wings to attach to. The hangers were glued and massively taped to cardboard for structure. We then added straps and done. They are large enough to be worn by kids and adults so they will get extra mileage as well. Most of the costume is sewn with a little help from hot glue and duct tape when needed.
We are thrilled with the results and cannot wait to trick or treat tonight!!
