A word from Deirdre, the 'Marie Antoinette' costume creator:
I made the outfit for both my husband and myself. While the headless idea isn't new, I wanted to make it really anatomically accurate. Sitting on a chair, especially with my eyes slitted, everyone thought I was an animatronic. It was really fun.
Essentially everything that couldn't be made (except for the wig) was purchased in second-hand shops, which meant it was inexpensive and assisted others. The difficult part was making the torso for the dress -- that just took patience in putting together a realistic torso out of papier-mache. I then fastened the torso onto a vertical slat of wood. The other end of the wood I wedged in a backpack. When I put on the backpack, the torso sat comfortably above my head. With the outfit on, I was positioned right at my "lap."
