A word from Chelene, the 'Madame Serena Speaks' costume creator:

I am known at my place of employment as the Queen of Halloween. I make my own costumes every year and they never know what to expect from me. I have to keep outdoing myself every single year though. So I thought about it for a while. I needed to blow them out of the water with this. I decided to be a fortune teller in a box, though not like the electronic one. I went for like a gypsy type that you could visit in person. The speaks part of it came from the movie "Big". I made the costume out of 2 cardboard boxes. Cut the front out of it to make the window. The table piece is made from putting the flaps of the boxes together, that helped with support. There is a wooden rod that held a curtain in front of the window. I kept that part closed until time to walk in the contest. There are some battery operated black lights that were put in. Also a foam ball that I covered with glow in the dark paint and sparkles for the crystal ball. The light was too bright to see it glow though. The cardboard was covered with wood looking wrapping paper that I found in the dollar bin at target. The lights came from walmart's halloween aisle and costs about $5. I already had the boxes, wooden rod, and fabric for the curtain. The images of tarot and zodiac cards where printed onto some paper and we colored them with markers and stuck them to the front, top of table, and sides. I printed out the words for the sign, put them on the sign and covered it with sparkles also. I made fortune cards too and passed those out to bystanders. I wore clothes that I already owned, put a scarf over my hair, wore lots of jewelry and put on my white contact lenses to give my eyes a creepy look. It was a hit.
