This homemade costume for couples entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Cathy and Rocky, the 'Wyldstyle and Emmet from Lego Movie' costume creators:

Wyldstyle is Cathy Wong and Emmet is Rocky Grigg. We are a couple in real life. Everything is handmade with the exception of the neck and hands, which were cut with tools. The estimate cost of the costumes were around $150 and it took us about 50 hours to make, not exaggerating! We came up with the idea to be Legos when we saw the new Lego movie.

Before anything happened we measured width and length of all body parts. 2 leg pieces, 1 body, 1 neck, 1 head, and two hands for each costume

Constructing the costume...
Body- cardboard boxes in which we asked for at multiple stores (the only free thing we could get) the body was precut with a cardboard box razor. then duct taped on the inside edges where they connect to make a rectangle and then caulked at the end to secure. same with legs!

head was made up of foam, construction paper, and cardboard. we placed foam at top and bottom and put 5 ruler size cardboard to hold them together, so think of it like a birdcage, it's hallow inside. then we glued yellow construction paper to make the shape, eyes, mouth and anything on face is construction paper. the mouth part that is hollow on both faces is cheesecloth spray painted black, girl had white, that's where we looked out of.

legs were made the same way the body was but we also put 4 pieces of foam , 1 on each side of box to secure our legs when we walked. foam was also put on the bottom so the box didn't touch the ground.

hair for both heads and wyldstyles' hoodie was made from felt and pillow stuffing

hands were shaped by a dremel and then construction paper was added and paint sticks is what we held each hand with

the neck was cut out with a professional machine to make perfect circles then attached to the bottom of the head. the neck/head was attached to the body by using velcro, to make sure it stayed in place as we walked.

everything that is detailed was drawn out by cathy by hand, no tracing or anything, then glued on. we used hot glue, spray adhesive glue, glue stick, and foam glue for random materials.

constructing the costume was done by Rocky all details were done by cathy! people loved our costumes everywhere we went but we didn't win any contest. we lost to hot sauce bottles, beetle juice, and british police, so hopefully we can win something here :)
