A word from Rachel, the 'Harry Potter Family' costume creator:

Mother(me) dementor, dad Sirius Black, Son Harry Potter riding Buckbeak, daughter Hermione.Every year I make a costume that incorporates my son and his wheelchair the last two years before this he was Harry Potter, so this year when he want to be Harry Potter again, I wanted to come up with something different, so I came up with the idea of my son as Harry Potter riding Buckbeak and the rest of the family and I as other characters who were in that part of the book. I made Buckbeak completely by hand out of various gray Fabrics and feathers,I made him as a giant stuffed animal with a hole in the middle so it could fit around my son's wheelchair and look like he was flying on his back, I also took a black bed sheet and painted stars on it to make it look like the night sky and draped that over his wheelchair to not only cover up the wheelchair and keep him warm but to also add to the illusion of him flying on buckbeak. For my dementor costume I use a simple black dress and sewed on strips of various types of material, I also made a cape out of Black fabric, to finish off the Dementors look I use black and gray and white face paint to paint my face up to look like a dementor I also used a Sheer black fabric that I turned into a bandana. I painted a very detailed dementor mouth on to it and wore that over the bottom part of my face. For Sirius Black for my husband we used an old jail costume and then I took different colors of gray fabric and made him a jacket to go over that, for my sons Harry Potter costume we used a Gryffindor scarf a Gryffindor tie, along with a gray sweater which I sewed on a handmade Gryffindor patch that I made for it and The Wizard robe which I made completely by hand was made out of black fabric and I used orange fabric for the lineing, for my daughter's Hermione costume I took a gray sweater and sewed on a handmade Gryffindor patch that I made for it,she wore a Gryffindor scarf, and her wizard robe was made completely by hand from black fabric and I used orange fabric with black cats for the lining. Since the costumes were either made by fabric I bought and were completely made by hand or made by other items that we had laying around the house the total cost for every thing came to about $35 or so, which is a lot cheaper than buying everything!
