Gandalf and Galadriel Couple's Costume

My boyfriend and I decided at the last minute to dress up and invite ourselves to a party. We had three weeks to get ready. Although I have many home made costumes, I like to make new ones every year. I have a bolt of burlap for landscaping putpose which gave me the idea to make a rustic Gandalf robe. I bought some brown linen on sale for $2.50 a meter to make the tunic. My boyfriend used plastic tubing to stiffen the hat rim and I sewed without a pattern. A word of caution...burlap stinks and must be washed and hung outside to dry for several days to make it bearable. At Value Village I found a brown karate belt . Gandalfs beard and hair are made from two blonde wigs cut apart then spray painted with grey and white hair colouring. My wig was braided and put in boiling water to set waves. My crown is wire covered in hot glue then sprayed gold and hand painted another shade of gold. The dress was a cheap store bought princess dress that I changed the neckline and wear backwards! I used iron on fabric webbing to attach gross grain ribbon as the belt and middle seam. The large jewellery piece was hot glue melted onto parchment paper which was trimmed off after it hardened and painted. I bought white shiny fabric again on sale to make the cloak. We had fun but Gandalf was quite hot.
