This homemade costume for boys entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Luke, the 'Doctor Octopus' costume creator:

I built this for my son, 2017 Halloween costume. I used all craft foam, Eva foam, foam pool noodles and 4 led lights. All of this plus paint can be bought at Walmart for less than $50. Pinterest was a huge help in figuring out how to form and shape the various pieces of foam.

Could you email me any instruction you might have on making a replica of this costume? Would love to put something similar together for the hubby. Thanks!

Howdy all,
I don't have a tutorial for this specific costume! Sorry, I just haven't done this yet. I do however have a YouTube channel were I show how to make similar things. Look up Reformed Props.

Luke, how did you get the foam noodle to bend and strap to the back? I looked at your reformed props and didn't find a similar project other than the foam clay and boots

Howdy David,
so I used a heat gun to warm up some pvc and then I bent it to the shape I wanted. Then I put the pool noodle over the pvc like a sleeve. This technique also allowed me to secure the pvc to a piece of wood that I then glued all the foam noodles and extra detail too. The straps were also glued and screwed to the wood base plate. Hope that helps!

Luke,

This setup is awesome! I hoped to make something similar for my son.

To that end; I love the noodle fitted on PVC idea. Sweet! Probably makes it easier to feed the electric through to those tentacle lights.

But what about the detail. I've seen others cutting details out of exercise foam mats. Some mold plastic. What material are you using & what are the specs (i.e., thickness, etc.)?

I especially love the yellow slats and bolts on that detail. Plus how uniformly and uniquely shaped each piece is. Did you cut these by hand? Is this just somethings that comes along with using whatever material you are using?
