A word from Jason, the 'Calgary Police Service' costume creator:

My 5 year old son Max absolutely loves the Calgary Police Service (CPS) and wanted this for a costume. I bought plain black canvas pants and a plain black dress shirt in his size. I used fabric glue to hold down bright red ribbon for the stripes down the pants and hand stitched the edges. For the shirt I found CPS graphics on the internet and printed the exact patches they use on a sheet of dark fabric iron-on transfer. I re-purposed an old sheriff badge and stitched it on the chest. He had and an old pilots cap that I glued red ribbon around and found a CPS badge graphic and inserted his name on the bottom. I laminated one for his pocket and printed another on the fabric transfer sheet that I ironed on to a piece of black fabric that I stitched over top of the pilots emblem on the hat. I also wanted to make the top of the brim shinny and cover the decorative yellow thread detail (can still see it in the early photos), so I applied some black acrylic paint with a brush and when it had dried, used some 'Mod Podge' to give it a shinny finish. Max wanted to add a black 'clip-on' tie and we used an old black belt with a few black sheaths from old pocket knives or small flashlights for carrying his plastic cuffs and a flashlight. Finally, we bought a large and small "POLICE" back patch from Army Surplus and I stitched one on the back of the shirt and one on the back of his black jacket (Not Shown). The jacket also has some silver reflectors so he's more visible at night. All in the costume took a good few hours, but the cost was:
shirt= $8
Tie= $10
Pants= $10
Ribbon= $3
Patches= $10
The other stuff I just re-purposed or found around the house (toy gun, sunglasses, a fake moustache).

Thanks!
