A word from Ami, the 'C3PO and R2D2' costume creator:

Hi
A couple of weeks before the holiday, my 12 year old son asked me to make for him a C3PO costume. However just one costume was not enough :) and he insisted to have an R2D2 alongside him...

So I decided to embrace the challenge...

For the R2D2 on wheels I used an old plastic garbage can with a round head (see photo of the can before the work began). I wrapped the body of the can with a sponge sheet to increase the diameter a bit (using a hot glue gun) and spray painted to round top with metallic silver spray paint.
Then I printed the design of R2d2 on A4 size paper on our home printer (40 pages !) and cut and glued one by one round the can.
The legs of R2D2 were made from a leftover piece of plywood I found. I cut the legs out using a vertical hand saw and in between the two pieces of plywood, I put a piece of Styrofoam which was cut down to the same size. So every leg (before coating) looked like a Styrofoam sandwich in between 2 pieces of plywood (see photo of me attaching the middle leg)
Every leg was coated using white heavy paper, and again, here to , I printed the side view of an R2D2 I found on the web and glued the A4 sheets one by one to from the full leg view.
I added wheels that I took off an old dresser, and the 3 legs (one on the bottom center, 2 on the sides) were screwed on to the can.
The top silver head was then decorated to look like the original R2D2 using blue, and Silver heavy fabric strips and Styrofoam balls and other shapes
At last I attached (with screws) a plastic handle from an old kids bike to the back of the can so that my son would have an easy time wheeling R2D2 while walking
For C3PO I used a full body golden suit as a base (not critical, but I decided to use it so that it gave a more perfect look)
Then I cut out of golden cardboard some arm and leg covers and a chest cover (along with some leftover color wires I found in the toolbox that I attached to a black strip of foam and then added it to the bottom of the chest piece). Also added to the chest some lines drawn to look like muscles
Added a cheap mask which I bought on the web for 3$ (added to it some golden strips at the eyes to make it look like the original) and I gold spray painted some old crocs as well.
And that's it. Aside from the photos am also enclosing a link to the video that my daughter took (she added some R2D2 sounds ) so that you can see the 2 robots on the move.
Took me a week to make (in the evenings) but my kid was in seventh heaven with all the attention he got a t school, which was totally worth it.
Cheers
Ami
