A word from Andrea, the 'Alice's Family in Wonderland' costume creator:

Halloween always seems to come sooner than expected. The day after the previous Halloweed, I have good ideas and plans for the next year. Then around April or so, I try to pick the family theme for that halloween with every intention of getting started earlier in prep work. All good intentions, all never happen. Skip to the week of Halloween (or the weak of our trunk or treat party), and stress, stress, stress, burns, cuts, scraps, crying, complaining aaaaand viola! Fantastic crowd pleasing costumes.
Every year I try to do a themed family costume. We usually try to keep the budget to under $5 and do all homemade things. This year I chose alice in wonderland because my toddler’s name is alice and she said she wanted to wear a blue dress like a princess. (I know, there’s elsa, cinderella, snowwhite… but i like alice in wonderland for the red queen and mad hatter better ;)
Everyone loved our costumes and kept asking how long it took to make. Not long!
These costumes were made with a $1 budget used on some balloons to help create the red queen wig. The bunny hat on my 1year old was crocheted with white and pink yarn and lots of grueling hours in the middle of the night while husband snored next to me. Alice in wonderland, worn by my adorable 2 year old, was created by crocheting a yellow hat, then hot gluing strands of yellow yarn (as well as my fingers a few times) and crocheting a black headband with bow. The outfit was from the closet and the white apron was used from leftover chair refinishing scraps that were hot glued together (#momwin). Yours truly was the red queen outfit was from the closet and the wig was made from a crocheted red hat (also lots of grueling hours in the middle of the night while husband continued to snore), balloons taped on top, and yarn hot glued over it. (add in multiple hot glue burns on the leg and arms for added effects). The mad hatter, played by my ever supportive husband, his outfit was also born of the never ending, magical closet and the hat made of cardboard with, pause for effect, chair refinishing scraps again! That was glued on and then wrapped with an orange ribbon leftover from old wedding bouquets. (being a craft hoarder seems to have its advantages.)
Now for the fun part! The face paint of the queen and hatter was done with an old makeup brush, hands, and……. Crayola washable finger paints! Yep, the toddler craft stash was hitup to make our costumes perfecto!
