This homemade costume for couples entered our 2016 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Brooke, the 'Zombie American Gothic' costume creator:

There is a zombie pub crawl in our town right before Halloween and my husband and I LOVE to go! This was the 4th annual Zombie Ball & Pub Crawl and the event has really caught on. People go ALL out with their costumes, including us :)

We decided to be zombie American Gothic. Not quite sure what sparked that idea, but it was a blast! I love getting creative (especially when its cheap) for Halloween and seeing reactions to our costumes!

Lady (me):
Black longsleeved shirt - Goodwill $5
Floral dress (cut to look like an apron) - $5
Long tank top dress (worn under shirt) - had at home
Collar - made from white satin ribbon I had at home
Brooch - jewelry section of Hobby Lobby for $3 (hot glued a safety pin to the back of it so I could fasten the collar together)

Guy (husband):
Sport coat - Goodwill $8
White button up shirt - had at home
Jeans - Had at home
Glasses - Dollar store $1
Pitchfork - Party City $10
We wanted to use overalls for his costume, but couldn't find any at resale shops, so we went with what we had. We had actually bought suspenders for $15 at Ross, but they weren't very visible and not worth the money, so we returned them! Everyone still got the idea ;)

Eye Wound:
As you can see from the photos, I made it look like I was missing an eye and stuck a painted ping pong ball to the pitchfork to make it look like my husband poked my eye out. People would be amazed at my eye, then see the ball on the pitchfork and get really excited LOL. It was a blast watching people string the details together!

I bought the

Guts:
I made my husbands "guts" out of spaghetti boiled in red water and stuffed in one leg of panty hose. I took a piece of cardboard, the size of his torso, and covered it in felt, then I hot glued the spaghetti/pantyhose/intestines to the felt. Then I attached elastic to the cardboard so it would stay in place on his torso. We then, of course, cut his shirt open and covered it in "vampire blood" I got at walmart for $4.

We had the idea for the costume about a week out, but made it all come together in just a few hours! If you’re curious on how we did our wounds, all you need to do is look up some YouTube videos. It basically boils down to applying layers of glue and toilet paper, ripping it open so it looks like torn skin and applying makeup and paint!
