This homemade costume for girls entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Nicole, the 'Steampunk Mad Hatter' costume creator:

Our family is into the steampunk genre which provided the basis for this costume's theme. My daughter was named for the book Alice in Wonderland and this costume was loosely inspired by the mad hatter. The costume is made from a store bought long sleeve black t-shirt, a machine sewn circle skirt made from green velvet and accented with black lace trim and a machine sewn bustle made from black satin. A coordinating vest was made to match her home-made hat. The vest is reversible (green velvet and green quilting fabric) so she can wear the green velvet dress for Christmas too! The total cost for this costume after sales and couponing was about $40. I've made a lot of costumes and dresses using the free pattern on the Craft Your Home blog: http://craftycupboard.net/2012/05/twirly-t-shirt-dress-tutorial/ I highly recommend it!
