Rainbow Dash Pony Costume

Costume type:  Costumes for Women
Categories:Halloween Costumes, Cartoon Costumes, Animal Costumes

This homemade costume for women entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Joelle, the 'Rainbow Dash' costume creator:

I am wearing this costume to my niece's 2nd Birthday Party.

This costume was made at home with the following materials:

  • 4 yards of blue plush fur layers the body of the costume. I used a black shirt and leggings as a replica of my size, so the costume would fit.

  • The head is made out of a balloon and 5 layers of newspaper. The technique used is a pinata base, I let sit for 2 days. It sits ontop of a basic bike helmet, so it can strap to my head.

  • The feet are made out of metal broom sticks. Which are put together like stilts. Around the stilts is foam to make the legs thicker and also for padding when walking.

  • 5 packs of multi-color hair. Some of the colors were not in the store, so I spray painted them.

  • wings are made out of cardboard and has a belt so I can strap it around my mid-section.

  • Foam lining my stomach for comfort and legs for more horse shaped hind legs.

  • Eyes are paper, I colored them then glued them on and covered them with plastic.

  • The entire suit is hot glued together!! I do not know how to sew, so I had to used this method.

The idea came to me after watching season 1 of "My Little Pony" and fell in love with the characters, especially Rainbow Dash.

I already love horses!! So that didn't help either..lol.

It took me 3 weeks to finish her in time for Otakon 2012 and in time for my nieces party. Kids loved her!

This is so cute! My granddaughter loves horses and I have been struggling to find a horse pattern. Is the horse head on top of your head (bike helmet)? Is there an opening for hands? Thanks for your help!

Yes the bike helmet sits ontop of my head. :) Don't connect the front arms to the body. Keep it separate.

Is the balloon just a regular balloon or a horse shaped balloon. If it is horse shaped could you tell me which store and city you got it from because I can't find any.

It Is a regular shaped balloon

How do you make a costume like this? Do you know anyone who would make one for me? I would love to be a MLP Character for the Sakura-con Coming up. I would love to hear back from you! PS I also love horses ^-^

These suits are massively expensive. Custom full body suits can get to over $3000. I know there is one on eBay on sale for $500 but it is Big Macintosh. I am currently working on one using the methods I found on YouTube on how to build furry suits. It takes a ton of time and supplies but if you have any creativity you can do it.

Hey Caitlyn!! I'm a horse lover too!!! XD I could make a costume for you, if you help to supply the materials. I'm thinking about making a my little pony quadsuit group sometime soon :) I went to Otakon as Rainbow Dash last year, I took soooo many pictures. Lol. It's tiring walking around but worth it!! [at] Ethan I totally agree with the cost of costumes. That's why I just decided to make my own.

How do you see out of the head?

#12 comment by Joelle September 1, 2013

I don't. I look out of the neck. There's eye holes with plastic that matches the fur color.

what are the ears made out of?

The whole head is one piece. I used paper mache to construct it. But your better off using foam. Its lighter and Less strain on your back.
