This homemade costume for pets entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Krystine, the 'Pug Palm Tree' costume creator:

My pug Mr. Darcy is wearing the a DIY palm tree costume. I was trying to think of something unique for him to be this year. We live in South Florida, so I decided to make him a palm tree. Of course, I put the costume on him and he immediately ran into something, damaging the paint on one of the coconuts :/

Materials: green felt (I used 7 rectangles), green pipe cleaners, a green marker, medium sized foam balls (I used 6), brown spray paint, hot glue and a hot glue gun, needle and thread, and scissors.

1. Spray paint your foam balls brown and leave to dry (re-coat later if needed.
2. Cut the green felt into a rectangle that is the length of your dog's collar (not including the buckle) and twice the width.
3. Fold the rectangle in half and sew the ends together length-wise to form a sleeve for the collar.
4. Using your fingers, flip the sleeve inside out so that the seam is on the inside.
5. Cut your remaining felt into palm fronds (as many as you'd like).
6. Attach one pipe cleaner to each palm frond using the hot glue gun (you want the pipe cleaner to be in the center, lengthwise, to look like a leaf vein).
7. Draw more veins on the frond using your marker.
8. Sew the fronds onto the felt sleeve, layering them as necessary.
9. Glue your foam coconuts into a bunch of 2 or 3 using the hot glue gun.
10. Glue your coconut bunches onto the sleeve/top of the fronds, placing them wherever you'd like.
11. Mold the pipe cleaners to give the fronds some shape.
12. Put a collar through your sleeve and place it on your pup.

Cost: Around $20! I think I paid $13 for materials (not including the sewing kit, spray paint, or hot glue gun)
