A word from Ashley, the 'Mrs. Doubtfire' costume creator:
Mrs. Doubtfire is my all-time favorite movie. I watch it before every big life event (board examinations, interviews) and it never fails to make me laugh. I carved Robin Williams into my pumpkin this year as a tribute to his life, and I wanted to also honor him with my costume. My friend gave me the initial idea, as she knows how much I adore him and this movie.
I went to local NYC thrift shops to find the skirt, shoes and glasses. I did my hair myself and sprayed it with white hairspray. I had a white button down shirt that I burned holes into to remake the kitchen scene in the movie. I did not have the proper embroidery on this shirt, so I used acrylic paints to replicate her flower pattern. I made the broach out of an existing broach base and a large purple earring I found.
I had my friend film various parts of getting ready so I could remake the transformation scene: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152395375891611&pnref=story
His leg was used in the video to make it more fun.
My friends absolutely loved it. Many people have a love for this movie and for Robin Williams, so I think they appreciated the tribute.
Here is a link to a video I created to mimic the transformation scene:
