A word from Karen, the 'Mother Nature' costume creator:

My costume this year was inspired by my daughter. I am a first time new mom and though a "mother" themed costume was perfectly fitting! Starting fe the top, I designed a crown of wild flowers out of grapevine and various florals and added a nest and a bird to finish off the look. I created the bodice out of a halter top, and covered it in bark like material with added pieces of real bark and moss throughout to give it texture and realness. I made mushrooms out of material and dusted them with different shades of eyeshadow to bring them to life. On my shoulder you will see a mossy wildflower and succulent garden draping down being kissed with butterflies made out of doublesided cutouts. As u move down the trunk to my midsection I used old swatches of leathers, suede and leases in different Browns and tends to continue the wooded look from the bodice and draped a creepy table cloth that I dyed dark green to look like old man's beard over top of the skirt. The foot design was created with leg warmers and wrapped around an ankle boot. One foot was a wild mossy Meadow inspired look with butterflies and the other foot was pinecones and a squirrel running up my leg. The squirrel I found in the pet toys section at homesense. I took out the squeeky noise thing and stuffed the body with cotton balls and shoved a coated wire through the tail to allow me to bend the tail in the shape I wanted. I then sewed different part of the squirrel to make the body look like to was in motion rather than it be laying there flat and lifeless. And finally I decided to keep my makeup really light airy and natural to complete the look. I am so happy with how everything turned out! Totally worth every single glue gun burn on my fingers and legs while attaching the different elements :)
