This homemade costume for babies entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest, and won 1st place in the Favorite Halloween Costume nomination!

A word from Angie, the 'Little Old Lady' costume creator:

This is my 10 month old daughter, Autumn. Just after Autumn was born I got sick with a rare autoimmune disease called GBS. I was sick in the hospital for all of January 2012 and then used a walker to get around Feb - March 2012. After seeing the thing around my house for all of these months, and watching her try to use it recently, I asked my dad to cut the legs off and got the idea to make her a Little Old Lady costume for Halloween. I used hand made clothes, stuffing for saggy boobs and a costume beard (that my older daughter used 5 years ago for a Gandolf costume) that I turned into a wig with a bun.

Thanks everyone! It was a fun costume and she was the perfect age for it, since she was just learning to walk. Little cutie pie! Also glad to have found another use for that walker. She loves that thing!

Angie Rocks...but we've known this for years! Wish I could meet Autumn someday! Love ya girl!

#25 comment by Sharon Colleen December 3, 2012

I find this "costume" in really poor taste...obviously the creator has never had to care for an elderly person as many of us have...it is mocking in its gesture and really disrespects a class of women who we, as women, should uplift in at least in spirit if not fiscally...having suffered from a debilitating illness herself, you would think this mother would have a bit more empathy for those disabled and poor....

#26 comment by Britt Daniels May 10, 2013

Oh... my... gosh. She is the cutest thing EVER!!
And to Ms. Sharon--lighten up. It's a HALLOWEEN COSTUME. It's not a slight to anyone. It's the old adage, "Once an adult, twice a child." It's a perfect costume!

#27 comment by Louise Marie July 25, 2013

Sharon, honey, you have somehow lost your sense of humor. If my mother were here she would get a good laugh out of this costume. She was 83 and unable to use the walker when she passed away, but her sense of humor was intact. She loved to make people smile and laugh. This costume is a joy to most people. i am sure that, unlike you, most people smile when they see it including the elderly. Angie, i hope you win the contest. You deserve it.

This is the funniest thing I've ever seen! I love it! I have a new grandbaby on it's way so I will remember this for sure.

#29 comment by Amanda Andersen September 30, 2013

I am in love with this costume. My little girl is 10 months and this costume would be perfect for her..... Problem is I can't figure out how to do it! Where on earth did you find a wig that small!!?? Also where do you live! Do you still have that walker? I would be willing to buy it from you for her costume this year- or pay to borrow it.............. :). Hopefully you get this message in time for Halloween and give me some advice to make this costume I absolutely die over it!

My friend posted this pic on fb, so cute! My special needs child has her own walker, would love to find the attire!

#31 comment by Susan Kranz October 5, 2013

Great custome and so funny. It would be perfect for my 11 month granddaughter. Do you know where I can find a walker in the St. Louis area?

#34 comment by Nancy October 6, 2013

This is so precious!! Thank you for posting! My 2 year old has spina bifida and uses a walker. We are totally doing this for Halloween!! :)

#35 comment by Angie October 7, 2013

I had a lot of requests to buy the walker, so I decided to post it on ebay.

#36 comment by Amanda October 8, 2013

LOVE IT! S&H is $38 to me. I added it to my Watch List. :)

#37 comment by Donna October 8, 2013

Though you may think this is cute it is offensive to those of us who are older adults and/or who have disabilities.

Please rethink how this can be hurtful to others

#38 comment by Katherine Ullmer October 9, 2013

A friend showed me this on her phone but I was not a friend on Facebook so she couldn't sent it to me...but I looked it up...such a great photo....fun to see and very creative...

#39 comment by Marily October 9, 2013

I love it!! Great job Angie and Autumn :)
My daughter's first year old birthday is on Halloween and I'm looking for a great creative custom. I'd love to buy. If not can you share how did you cut the legs off and add the wheels?! I'd really appreciate it!!
Good luck!!

#40 comment by Alexandra October 10, 2013

I really want to dress up my niece in this costume. My sister said it can be done if I find the walker. Is there anyway you can give me advice to do that?

#41 comment by Angie October 10, 2013

I had the walker, so I'm not sure where you'd need to go to find one... Brand new, they run about $100, but maybe Goodwill, a garage sale or even ebay will have them for cheap. My dad cut the legs shorter with special saw that was able to cut metal. He then drilled holes through the poles so that we could re-attach the wheels. I hope this helps!

Angie,
I have been obsessing over this costume since I saw this pic on Pinterest for the first time. Taylor, my 15 month old was the little old lady this Halloween. Everyone is saying this is hands down, the best kid costume ever!!! I can take no credit for your creative genius. I just wanted to thank you for the fabulous idea. I wonder just how many little old ladies have walked the streets on Halloween since Autumn?!?! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!

#43 comment by Sharon Haynes November 6, 2013

That is adorable !!! Love it

#44 comment by Deborah February 5, 2014

Cute!

#45 comment by Lori Casales October 16, 2014

So adorable!! I do not understand the 2 women on here who had negative comments? The costume is not making fun of 'old people'. It is a baby, dressed as an old lady, which is funny. Adults dress as babies sometimes and no one gets offended. Anyway, I saw this on Pinterest and wanted to comment on how cute it is!

#46 comment by Autumn Chambers October 30, 2014

First off, I have to say the 2 negative women on here please refer to comment #34 by Nancy and get over yourself. It can also be something disabled children can do without anyone really noticing they have a disability. REALLY COOL! I think this is a crack up and can't wait to do it next year when my little one will be walking. Also, I just have to mention that my name is also Autumn and after I recently had my baby girl Henley I to developed a blood auto immune disease. I spent many months in the hospital. Starting with a pseudoaneurysm they found when she was 6 days old that required coiling. Shortly after that became abscessed and then I required a drain tube for an entire month. 3 days after that was removed, they decided my spleen needed to be taken out completely. Scar from my breast to belly button. After that I developed a blood clot, portal vein thrombosis. Currently still have that. Now I have an auto immune disease, that is called antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. I will require to take blood thinners for the rest of my life and I have no spleen. Meaning I can get sick very easily and bleed a lot quickly with an injury. I still find this costume great. You took something very difficult for you and your family and turned it in to something that brought joy and laughter to many people. I absolutely love this and admire you for how you turned it around to something positive. I hope all is well for you now, God bless!
