A word from Gina, the 'Legend of Zelda's Link from Breath of the Wild' costume creator:

My son Elijah Green is wearing the costume. The costume is homemade by me with some help from Elijah. All the items were bought either from walmart or goodwill. The Master Sword & Shield were bought from walmart.com ($52 for both). I bought the tshirt, pants, fabric paints ($12), and boot polish ($4.97) from walmart. The boots, belts, gloves & long sleeved white shirt ($14.50 for all) came from goodwill. Other supplies I needed came from my own craft & tool sets at home. I'll start from bottom. The boots were a lucky find cause we needed a riding type boot specifically brown. Online the cheapest I could find were about $40. So of course I went goodwill hunting. I found these boots for $3! Much better price. Issues were they were light brown & one size too big. Easy fix of brown polish and some tissue stuffed in the toes fixed that. The polish made the boots new looking so I used a light sandpaper to rub off some of the shine. The pants was the easiest part. The only things needed to be done was a soaking in bleach water to lighten the color cause they were a bit darker than we needed. And to make them look more worn I used sandpaper to rub areas such as knees, shins, sides and rump. Pants cost $8.97. The under shirt needed was a long sleeved white one so it was easy to find. $1.50 at goodwill. We needed the bottom half of the sleeves to be yellowed so for that I soaked the bottom half of the sleeves in a bowl of warm water with some tea bags for about a half hour. Neat trick learned by mother. She had done that to soak long strands of cheese cloth to make me a mummy one year. I loved walking around smelling like tea.. ha! I used green and orange fabric paint to make the patterns on the sleeves and collar of the shirt. For Link's champion tunic I got a turquoise tshirt 2 sizes too big for my son. I removed the collar area & cut in a lowered v shape. I also cut an 8 inch slit up each side. I put a few stitches at the top of the cuts to prevent accidental ripping. Then following pictures I printed off the internet of the champion tunic I drew with pencil first the pattern onto the shirt. A bit difficult.. took quite a while. Lots of erasing & redrawing lol. Then I painted the pattern on.. much easier. I used a hair dryer for a quick dry then ironed the shirt to heat infuse the paint into the shirt. To make the baldrick.. cause baldricks online.. very pricey. I bought a couple different brown belts from goodwill, cost $8. This was challenging as well. I did get lucky enough to find a belt that had an adjustable loop on it so that made creating the loop to hold the scabbard much easier. I cut a semi circle notch into the side of the belt so that it would sit better on his side. The original buckle had to be cut off cause it was a woman's belt & the buckle was a funky looking thing. I stitched & glued on a more fitting looking buckle from of of my own old belts. The second belt I stitched on to wrap around my son's waist & buckle on front. Then I stitched on the golden button & made a shoulder pad with a brown piece of leather from a small bag ($3) I got at goodwill as well. The gloves ($2) were easy. Just cut the finger tips off. The sheikah slate my son & I created together. With cardboard, a printed paper pattern, crayons, markers & yarn. All items we already had at home. I would say about a total of 20 hours went into this costume. Total cost estimate around $85, the Master Sword & Shield being the most costly. Yes I could've just ordered a factory made link costume for about $40, but have you seen them? This costume came out so authentic looking. We were quite happy with the results. We thank you for your consideration & wish you a Happy Halloween.
