A word from Martin, the 'Iron Giant' costume creator:
I'm the builder & wearer of the costume. I got the idea from a co-worker who said Iron Giant was his favorite childhood movie. I hadn't seen it before! My references were the '99 movie but also quality photos of the new toy released in Aug 2018.
The suit is made from EVA foam floor mats, and the eyes are 24 LED puck lights, stripped down and powered in series on a 9V battery. The diffusers are 1/4" discs of Magic Eraser foam 3/8" away from the LED's. For the torso I started with Evil Ted's template, widened it to fit me, trimmed it down as needed, then built up. The shoe covers are held in place with a band of nylon glued to one inside, and run under the shoe and are held in place with Velcro to keep them from moving. At the top of the shoe covers are pieces of Velcro connecting to the shins to stabilize them as well.
I'm looking through the mouth and below the jaw, and wearing a ski buff held in place with elastic & large safety pins.
Inside each forearm are 2 nylon loops for attaching keys, a pouch or phone lanyard to, as there are no pockets.
It took 2+ months and a lot of math! The forearms are hexagonal and shins octagonal.
