A word from Allen, the 'Hobbit Captured by Orc' costume creator:
This is a pic of myself wearing my "Hobbit Captured by Orc" costume. I had been wanting to build an illusion costume for a while, but didn't want to do the usual ape carrying a cage theme. So I combined a couple costume ideas into one and came up with this for the local Elliott in the Morning costume contest.(Unfortunately, they said my costume was too big to enter so I was unable to have them vote on it.) It took me a few weeks of work. I used a backpack to support the upper body of the Orc with a large piece of reinforced Styrofoam verically and another large piece that ran horizontally across the shoulders. A piece of hose ran through the shoulders to support the arm which were basically just stuffed stockings. I used spray foam insullation to mount the hands to the hose. The cage was made from hose and some wood dowels found at a craft store and then painted and Zip tied together. The Hobbits upper body was a stuffed shirt pinned and sewn to the pants(Stuffed also)And used short fake legs for the feet. I stuffed the hobbits arms down to the elbows and then cut holes on the back of the elbows to allow my real arms to stick thru the sleeves thus giving him real hands. I also ran a tent pole down between the Orcs shoulders as a neck and head support and used a Styrofoam wig head and built it up to support the Orc Mask. The Shoulder Cauldrons were made from 2 seperate masks that I cut in half and attached to the armor and shoulders. Total cost for materials was approximately $200. Hope you enjoy!
