A word from Heather, the 'Toy Soldier' costume creator:

This is my son Caysen. I looked on the Internet for boy costumes. This costume was one that popped up with tones of different tutorials. We live in a small town so sometimes things are not available and had to improvise. I purchased a simple long sleeve tee and some cargo pocket khakis to spray paint. Lighter colors are easier to cover with dark paint so all the pieces look alike. If you notice h the gloves are a bit darker. I couldn't find lighter gloves to fit him. I purchased a toy soldier play kit with a knife, gun, grenades, radio, binoculars etc. I painted those as well. I purchased rain boots and painted them and after four days they were still sticky with wet paint. I'm not sure if they ever will. So I had to grab a cheap pair of slip on shoes and spray paint them. This worked great and were quick to dry. I simple hot glued the toys to the shirt. I used a piece of elastic as a belt to glue the knife and grenades on to. It to was painted green of course. The bullets that are going across his chest are actually crayons glued to a piece of ribbon and then spray painted. I used Krylon Maxx cover paint, 5 cans for the entire costume. The board he is standing on was made of the foam board you can get at any store with craft supplies. I got it at the dollar tree. I spray painted it and after it dried covered with contact paper. I then cut a small slit on each side of where my sons foot would go and used elastic to make small cuffs for him to slide his feet into. This made them very easy to take of and put on. We had lots of fun with this costume and had tons of comments and amazing reactions from our friends. Best piece of advice is to start looking early for your supplies some were harder to find than others. Paint and try things on early in case you need to make adjustments. My total estimated cost for this costume is $60.00.
