A word from Jennifer, the 'Rocket Man' costume creator:

Scene something similar on Pinterest and told my husband he had to make something like that. Every year we try to come up with something crafty and unique and this definitely was it. The flames are made out of plastic table covers, glued together. We took a box cutter and cut out the flames. We then attached it to a belt. The legs are made out of cardboard. We took a big piece of cardboard and wrapped it around my husband's legs on the top and the bottom and then cut it to the size of his legs include the cardboard together. Heathen cut a slit in the top of the cardboard where the knee would be so that it would bend. Then we put pants over the fake legs put socks and shoes on the feet and my husband screwed the shoes into the cardboard so the shoes would not come off. We then put an extra long belt in the top of the pants so that we could attach it to his other pants. We then took fishing wire instrument through the cardboard above the knee and the pants and cut it long enough to reach from his knee to his hands so that when he raised his arms the legs raised also. The jetpack is made out of concrete pillars attached to a flat piece of cardboard. He then painted that silver and then took some black spray paint to the bottom of it like it had been on fire. He took a couple pieces of the red flames and attach them to the bottom of the jetpack. Then he took some scrap Wi-Fi wires and attach them to the pack. Then he made two holes on the top and placed disposable lights in it. Then he glued a strap to the jetpack and made it long enough to strap to his back. The shirt is two sizes bigger than he normally wears so that it would go over his waist and the fake waist. He bought the hat and goggles a few years ago it just so happened to come in handy for the costume. This costume was one of the funnest costumes we've ever made. It was a great illusion. So many people were confused on how his legs came up and he didn't fall. Not sure how we're going to top this next year.
