This homemade costume for groups entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Tom, the 'Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto' costume creator:

We try to make the 3 kids match theme-wise every year and I try to make every costume from scratch (even though I don't have any sewing experience) because my dad made all my costumes for me as a kid. My wife helps out when the sewing is just too complex but I was able to put these together with much less custom work than last year (Plants vs. Zombies).

I basically made all 3 shirts simply by cutting and sewing the accent pieces to plain t-shirts.

For Olive, I added the white lace to a long-sleeve red t-shirt and then sewed that to a black skirt after I added the yellow design. The earrings I bought at a store along with those boots that were PERFECT for the costume. My wife did the baby's hair in the Olive design (hard to see in the pics).

Popeye that red handkerchief thingy (sorry Navy people, not sure what its really called) gave me the most trouble out of everything for some reason (I guess because I don't know what I'm doing). I made it from scratch from a red bandanna and some black accent ribbon and then used trial and error until I could get it to lay right on the shirt. I sewed directly to the shirt. The pants I had to find in the girl's department (shhhh... don't tell my son) because I couldn't get it in boys in the right color. I found the buttons at Hobby Lobby and I used the tops of baseball socks rolled up to make the colorful rolled sleeve look. I sewed them to the inside of the shirt. For the forearms, I bought ladies nude/tan stockings (yes I had to explain to the salesgirl that I wasn't a cross-dresser) and then took another calf-length stocking and filled it with polyfil and stitched it closed before inserting and attaching to the forearm stocking (more complicated than need be? Probably but it kept moving because his arms are so skinny so I needed a way to keep it in the right position.) I drew the anchor tat freehand with a black sharpie and I cut the toes out to make his hand fit inside like a finger-less glove. The hat I made by adding ribbon and buttons to a plain jeff cap.

For Bluto/Brutus, basically the same design except I stitched polyfil into a nude leotard (?) shirt to make the muscles (hard to see the chest muscles in the pic but you can kind of see the biceps). The belt was a little league baseball belt that actually matched Popeye's socks. I drew in the goatee and the pants I found at Target I think. Thanks for looking & sorry it took me so long to upload!
