This homemade costume for girls entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Mayda, the 'La Muerte' costume creator:

My 9 year old daughter Snukumipeypey Orona is wearing the costume. We saw movie previews for The Book of Life about 6 months ago. when she saw it she immediately turned and said Mom I want to be the one in red.

How To:
Hat - foam construction hat from Michaels, the base cut out of foam board and then spray painted red, skulls, trim, and candles all made from foam and lots of hot glue, details painted with paint and some with permanent marker, flowers made from tissue paper, couldn't find large pink feathers so glued a bunch small ones to pipecleaner, artificial fern for green.

The dress - red dress, glued same tissue paper flower with some artificial flowers, foam candles, skulls, and the cuffs, choker made from black ribbon, gold foam and Velcro. Facepaint I did.

I'm painting the print on dress and making a larger hat is 31/2 feet diameter and making the skulls all out of clay so they will have demention instead of being flat

What did u use to make it stay circle on the both. Can u please email me please

#19 comment by Mayda September 19, 2015

Suzie I don't see an email for you. Im guessing your asking about bottom of dress. a small hula hoop works best (dollar tree)

#20 comment by Claudia September 23, 2015

The hat is cut out of a large 1/4 inch cardboard. used a foam play construction worker hat for center of the hat, the trim is made out of thinner cardboard (like soda can box)the candles are white foam rolled and lots of hot glue, the flame red orange yellow foam cut and glues, flowers on hat mixed with orange and yellow tissue paper flowers, I could not find lrge pink feathers so I glues lots of little one to pipe cleaners, skulls re made out of a toilet paper clay and I used a skull ice cube tray for the mold all painted with acrylic paints hope this helps

Do you make & sell costumes? Le Muerte costume for a 4yr old.

#24 comment by Beth October 6, 2015

Wow!! That's spot on! You should enter the business.

#25 comment by Rita October 12, 2015

I am in charge of making the hat for my granddaughter. I got a red Day of the Dead Hat at Nobbies for $10, cut out skulls from 3 different colors of construction paper. Will use foam for candles and fake flowers.

How did you make the dress? Did you use a pattern or eye balled it? I'm going to take the task of making the dress since the bottom needs to flare out, any pointers would be great! Making this for my 7 1/2 year old:)

#27 comment by Monica October 20, 2015

What facepaint do you use?

#28 comment by mayda October 21, 2015

had a long adult red dress made alterations to fit, base glued to a small hula hoop to give flare

Makeup = Pasradise Mehron waterbase. washes off very easy :)

#29 comment by Jen October 31, 2015

I'm hot gluing red glow sticks for the candles! Wish me luck!

#30 comment by Monica October 20, 2016

How did you get the bottom of the dressto keep its form? I tyed to use a hoola hoop but when she walks it flops from side to side?

I about died when my daughter asked to be this for Halloween! As long as you think outside of the box (and read forums) you can do it! So glad to have your costume to reference... I wanted to add... I used the medium sized lollipop sticks from Wilton for my candles. This way I didn't have to glue foam. I just simply added orange paper flames. VERY QUICK! I also didn't want to spend the money on ferns and feathers so I used the leaves left over from all the flowers for the costume and added them to a pipe cleaner to make my own ferns. I followed suit with pink felt to make my own feathers to save money. Since my daughter is asthmatic, face paint was out of the question. I bought a full-face Mardi Gras style mask for 2.99 from hobby lobby and broke out the sharpies to make her mask. Now she can dress up head to toe year round. Thank you so much for having such an amazing costume to follow! Hope my hints help anyone else whose child is adamant about being La Muerte!!!
