A word from Fred, the 'Angel of Death' costume creator:

Hi there. I hope you enjoy my creation. I wanted to make a competition level costume in 2015 after seeing someone come in to a bar on stilts in 2014. He had a store bought deluxe Avatar costume, but since they were taller than humans, he put himself on stilts to make it that much more impressive. I knew he would be in the contest that night.

After seeing the reactions and countless photos of everyone after he walked in, I decided I wanted to step it up and create something amazing. I looked around for ideas and inspiration online and finally came across the Spirit costume that is loosely based on the Landstriders from the movie The Dark Crystal. After looking at a ton of images and watching numerous videos, I started construction.

I found a tutorial online for making your own wooden stilts. So I made 2 2' stilts for my legs, and used crutches with a wooden frame built on top to make my front stilts. After that, I used insulation foam board to make the various shapes and pieces I attached to all four stilts. After that, I used mattress egg crates to cut the same shapes to help thicken and round out my shapes. After all of that, I begun shopping around for fabric. JoAnn's by me had a ton of Halloween fabric to choose from so I just bought what made sense for my vision. I wanted it to be dark and creepy and I think the fabrics I chose really achieved that. I also constructed a cape/back piece. I used an old vest, spray painted it black and attached more foam and fabric down the front and back to make the effect of the layered back.

Everything is attached using bolts, zip ties, glue, and tons of hot glue.

Once it was all done, I began teaching myself how to walk on stilts just for this costume.

When Halloween came, I took it out the night before with a friend for a test run. I won $150 at a local contest.

My girlfriend, a friend, and I went to Baltimore's PowerPlant LIVE! Halloween night to compete in their contest with the whole costume.

I can't express how amazing it was to see everyone's reactions and to see the hundreds if not thousands of photos I ended up being in. It was a huge hit and I ended up winning over $3,000 in cash and prizes that night.

Also that night, there was a local performance company on hand for the venue's Carnival Halloween theme. They offered me a job to come stilt walk for them, and since then I have made other contacts and now walk professionally and create costumes for gigs.

I really hope you all like what I made here and please vote for me. :)
