A word from Vanessa, the 'Firefly Family' costume creator:

My husband and I went as legendary Firefly couple, Zoie and Hoban Washburn. Our son was Captain Malcolm Reynolds. For Zoie's costume, I used regular twill pants and a collared shirt from the closet, but I made the iconic vest, holster, and string necklace myself at a cost of about $50. For Wash's costume, we used a flight suit costume (patches removed), a Hawaiian shirt from the closet and standard issue army boots. A little hair gel made his hair stand tall! Mal's costume was all clothing that one can purchase at Walmart. All in all, we spent about $100 to make these costumes happen if it wasn't already in our closet.
The vest was made from upholstery vinyl, which was not very pricey. Most of the cost came from buying the buckles to hold the sides together. I used an EZ Butterick pattern which I altered since the original Zoie vest has no seams in the front or back, and the sides are open with the aforementioned buckle closures. I freehand drew the holster and cut and sewed that together. There is no gun since we were trick-or-treating on an army base. Carrying weaponry seemed unwise.

Our family loves Firefly, and it was fun to put the costumes together.
