A word from Cori, the 'Dia de Los Muertos' costume creator:
I am, and have always had a huge interest in "Day of the Dead", the Mexican holiday that honors our loved ones who have passed. Because of this love, my kids have followed in my footsteps. My youngest, who is 6 years old, decided he wanted to dress up like this for Halloween. I search and searched but couldn't find any mariachi-style suits that were affordable, so I went to many local thrift stores; I ended up purchasing a bunch of separate items like black pants, black suit-style jacket, white button-up shirt, red winter scarf for the Banda (sash), and a women's silky scarf for the monos (necktie). To create the Trajes (suit)...braided trim was sewn on to create the pattern to follow in this style, and a few frog closures for the jacket. We did end up purchasing an authentic sombrero (hat)to complete the costume. We then painted his face in the traditional style and "Voila". Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
