This homemade costume for boys entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Nicole, the 'Dare Devil & Mater the Greater' costume creator:

My son, Joshy, absolutely LOVES the Mater the Greater character short takes, and is a little dare devil to boot. He even has his own motor cycle with training wheels. He wanted to be Mater the Greater for Halloween, so how better to get him into the action than with an interactive home-made Halloween costume! He gets to be the star of the show!

They will delight and entertain as Joshy climbs into Mater and races up the ramp to bravely jump over at least a dozen Matchbox cars!! Every boys' dream!!

I started this costume by printing out pictures of Mater from all angles, then created the shape out of cardboard and hot glue. Then I painted the carboard and added detail with sharpies and star stencils.I added real rope for the tow rope and a real hook for the tow hook, then painted these. I used bendy straws to form the mirror supports.

The ramp was made out of thin plywood and 2 by 4 construction, with cardboard sides. We came up with our own design for this to compliment the costume, and hand painted it.

The helmet was an old helmet from my husband's childhood, so I sanded and painted it to resemble Evil Kenevil's dare-devil helmet.

The dare devil suit was started using an astronaut pattern from Mc Call, then changed to include the wing tip collar and bell bottoms. The details for the costume were, again, borrowed from pictures of Evil Kenevil. I used buttons, ribbon, and star stamps to decorate the costume.

This costume did not have much cost involved, mostly time...but it was sooo worth seeing my little dare-devil and Mater take off that ramp and proudly jump the cars!!
