Category:Halloween Costumes

This homemade costume for pets entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Stephanie, the 'Scuba Dog' costume creator:

Ivory the pitbull/lab is wearing a DIY scuba costume. Which originated from her love of swimming in lakes, pools, puddles etc. I figured the costume was simple and inexpensive considering she is already wearing a wet suit :-)
After some thought I decided it was the perfect fit for her. The costume is simple to make and doesn't require much money to create the look.

How to start:
Step 1: Go to your local Micheals, AC Moore or your local craft store to purchase the materials. Some materials you can find around your home.
Step 2: Recycle Two Plastic water bottles ( sizes depend on your pet"a size).
Step 3: recycle or purchase a child's snorkle and mask

Materials:
2 plastic bottles- paper and cap removed.
2-3 yellow foam paper -12" x 12"
1 piece of black felt paper
1 roll of Velcro - 1" thick (quantity depends on size of pet)
1 12' roll of black duct tape -1/2 " thick
1 can of yellow spray paint
1 can of black matte spray paint
1 black permenant black marker
Scissors
3 ft of tubing ( lowe's, Home Depot, or your local hardware store)
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Gloves
Newspaper

Instructions:
1. Measure your dogs chest to see how much Velcro you will need. Make sure you have extra.
Cut and set side
2. Set up some newspaper outdoors with your spray paint, water bottles and tubes. Put on gloves.
Set up newspaper, hold up the plastic bottles by the opening and spray with the yellow spray paint. Spray all around the bottle. Apply twice to cover. Set aside and Let dry.
3. Spray the tubes using the black matte spray paint. Spray all around the bottle. Let dry and apply again, covering.
4. After dry wrap each bottle around the end and center with black duct tape. Now put the bottles side by side and apply duct tape to the center, attaching them together. Wrap a piece of Velcro around the two.
5 combine the bottles and tubing together by putting each end of the rubber tube in the bottles. Use the glue gun to secure the two together.
6 . Draw a flipper on a piece of paper as a guide and cut it out. Arrange it on the yellow foam, trace and cut out four for the legs. Once all four are cut out make equal holes on each fin for the dogs foot to go through.

Your costume is now complete. Apply the piece of Velcro you cut in the first step to fit around your pets chest, secure by wrapping. Now you can attach the air tank to their back. Put each fin on. Put the mask on and it's done.
Cost: $15.00

P.S Ivory did not move for 10 minutes. Haha
