A word from Ronda, the 'Cupcake' costume creator:

My Grand daughter Joslyn is wearing this homemade cupcake costume that is as every bit sweet as she is! Joslyn decided she wanted to be a cupcake and I went to work on figuring out how to make this happen. I looked on line for ideas on how to make a cupcake costume and went from there. A lot of people use a laundry basket as the base for the cupcake costume they made. I had an old lamp shade in my attic that I felt looked so much like the cupcake liner papers you can purchase in the store that I decided to see if my Grand daughter could fit into this lamp shade. I was happy to see it would be a good fit and we built up our cupcake from this old lampshade. Joslyn wanted the lamp shade to be pink, so I spray painted it pink. Then I made some suspenders out of elastic so that she could wear the lamp shade hanging freely on her body. Next, I needed to figure out how to make it look like there was frosting on the cupcake. Again, I looked for ideas on line and saw that most people used batting material to do this. I wanted it to look more like a swirl top like you see on a real cupcake in the store so I decided to fill white colored tights with batting. To do this I purchased 3 pair of adult size white tights and I cut the legs off of each pair of tights. After I filled each leg with batting, I sewed them all together to make one long piece of white tights filled with batting. Then I glued one row around the lampshade and kept circling the tights around the top of the cupcake base I had made out of the lampshade. I did several rows of tights around to complete my frosting look. Each row was hot glued to the other in order to keep them all in place. Be sure to leave an opening on each side for arms to fit through so you can freely carry your trick or treat bag and move your arms around. Joslyn will wear a white long sleeve shirt with this costume to complete the look. Next, we wanted sprinkles and we decided to buy some colored straws and cup them up into small pieces to resemble sprinkles on top of the frosting. My Grand daughter helped me cut up the straws and glue her sprinkles in place. I wanted to make a cherry on top of her head, so I went to my local craft store looking for supplies I could use to do this. I had a piece of foam board already at home and I cut a circle shape out of this foam board. I hot glued some of the batting material on top of the foam board piece to make it look like frosting. I tried to find a craft cherry I could glue on top of this. But, I could not find one so I did find a fake piece of fruit that was actually an apple that also resembled the shape of a cherry. I bought that and painted it red along with the stem. This seemed to look like a cherry to me so I hot glued it to the top of the head piece I was making. Next, I bought a head band and I hot glued the head piece I had made to the head band so that it would be easy for her to put on and take off. I bought a pink wig in the Halloween section at a local store. You could always buy the temporary spray hair color to spray on the pink color to your own hair if you wanted. To complete the costume, I purchased a cupcake prop for her to carry from our local craft store. She looks so adorable in this costume. I can hardly wait to see her wear it for her Halloween dress up time.
