This homemade costume for families entered our 2011 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Megan, the 'Despicable Me' costume creator:

I am Vector, my husband is Gru and my two kids are minions. I was trying to come up with a "family" costume that wasn't the standard everyone is a hippie...I made everything except my husbands pants and jacket.

I love it! The Minions are very cool and I love Gru and Vector! Some of the best Despicable Me costumes I have seen! Great Job!

HEY, I am AMAZED at your work on the Vector costume. How did you find that orange track suit? I have three girls who will be the girls from the movie, my husband is Gru, and I will be Vector. I'd love your advice.

Annie, I made the track suit, I bought orange sweats from walmart (they sell the orange right before halloween). I cut the top down the middle and added a white zipper, then fashioned the collar from and extra oranget-shirt I had that was the same color, and white fabric and very stiff interfacing. I used wonder-under to iron white bias tape to the sleeves and legs of the pants. I had to take the pants in some, taper them a little to give them a more fitted look like Vector. Honestly this costume took the least time out of all of them!

Lindsay, I don't know if I could sell them...make me an offer...

How did you make the minion heads?

#6 comment by Megan September 27, 2012

To make the minion heads I used a round pop-up clothes hamper ans covered it with upholstery foam, I cut holes for the arms, and then I cut through the foam but not the hamper for the mouth so the boys could see through them. I covered it in yellow fleece that I stitched up the side and added a round top to. I added some stuffing to make the top of the head round. I used a foam ball that I cut a slice out of and then covered with white t shirt fabric for the eyes, I put a mason jar lid around it for the goggles.

Megan, I just wanted to share with you our finished product. Thank you so much for your helpful ideas. I ended up making my Vector costume from scratch because I couldn't find an orange sweatsuit locally. Can i send it to your email?
