A word from Marilyn, the 'Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine' costume creator:

This is my 6 year old son, Trey wearing the Delorean Time Machine as his costume. It all started a few months back when my middle son, Derek, decided he wanted to be Marty McFly for Halloween, that lead to my older son, Dax, wanting to be Doc Brown. Trey didn't want to be left out, and decided he wanted to be the Delorean time Machine.

I found these images of paper deloreans online that you can cut out and make a mini Delorean. https://panerism.blogspot.com/2012/02/make-your-own-delorean.html or https://www.papertoys.com/delorean.htm

I projected the image onto a flatened cardboard box and which blew them up to the costume size 48"L x 18" W (If I did it again, I would shorten the length 6" or so) Then sketched it on to the cardboard, Cut it out and folded on the lines from the pattern which formed the car. When I folded it together, I used a strong spray adhesive to adhere it together, there were big ugly seems. I smoothed/hid the seems with Paper Mache, painted it and added lights and glow sticks and other tubes, boxes/gadgets for the time machine effect. I bought the lights from Hobby Lobby and Joann's in the wedding section using 40% off coupons. I inserted the lights into silicone tubes from Home Depot ($.19/foot). We attached with Suspenders.

I had a lot of the supplies on hand, box, paint, adhesive etc. so I didn't spend that much. To do it all from scratch I would estimate the cost being around $40
