This homemade costume for women entered our 2016 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Nancy, the 'Jellyfish' costume creator:

I'm wearing the costume. I saw a live-action show over the summer with Jellyfish on stage, and I thought I could modify their design a bit by using an umbrella. I found pictures online of jellyfish and jellyfish costumes, and I tweaked here, there, and everywhere to allow for materials I had on hand. I used a clear umbrella, which I covered with some translucent wrapping paper, and used a bit of duct tape to attach some battery-powered LED blue lights to the top of the umbrella. I cut up some shimmery gauze-type material in strips and attached those to the inside of the umbrella. I used about one yard each of purple, pink, and violet material. I sewed a basting stitch down the center of each strip, which provided nice ruffly ridges. I used some ED light strings interspersed with the fabric strips to add a little more pizzazz. I wore dark clothes under the umbrella. Fun to make - fun to wear!

Hi Nancy
I'm modelling my costume from yours. How many tentacles did you sew and what type of fabric exactly did you use please. How thick were your strips.
I want to shine as a jellyfish as there's about 40 ppl dpoing thme same sea creature…

Hello Marissa,
I just taped a string of blue battery-powered ELD lights to the inside of the umbrella, and then added a several strings of purple, pink, and blue ED lights (also battery-powered) hanging down from the edges of the umbrella. I used tape to secure everything, and I got all of the lights pretty cheaply from Amazon. Have fun!

Going to work on this costume this weekend. I have a question about the electroluminescent lights; I can't find any under 9ft long. Did you cut yours? If so, how many did you need to buy?

I got all the lights from Amazon. The string-y lights were Solmore 5x1 metre Neon Light EL Wire Waterproof LED. I used 3 of those, one in purple, one in pink, and one in white. Each one had 5 strings attached to a small battery pack which I duct taped to the umbrella pole. Each string was 1 meter (about 39 inches). The blue lights in the dome of the umbrella were LED fairy lights - I think it was about 16 feet, on a silvery wire, and the battery pack was also duct taped to the umbrella pole. I had to look back on my previous orders, and the string lights that I bought are not still available, but I'm sure you can find something similar. They are the kind kids use on their bikes. The blue lights are still available.

What kind of paper exactly did you use to cover the exterior? I'm not sure what you mean be translucent paper...
I bought a holographic cellophane and white tissue paper to try but if you can clarify I'll see if I can find it. Thanks!

Hi Nancy! I have the same question as Heidi! Did you use cellophane? I don't use it often but that's the only clear paper I thought of and I am impressed with that fluffy look you got on top. If you can clarify that, I would really appreciate it ! If you can give a tip on how you put on the paper to make it look like that that would be fantastic.

Like comment 8 & 9, I would love some more details about how you made the top/body of the jellyfish. Exactly what type of paper did you use and how did you get it to drape so softly at the bottom? Was the paper just on the outside of the umbrella or inside as well?

Hi! I used fluorescent-y cellophane paper I found at Michael's. It wasn't puffy enough the first time I tried it,so I got a Baby Blue Sheer Mirror Organza Round Tablecloth from LA Linen on Amazon. I covered the umbrella with the tablecloth, then covered that with the cellophane. I just used plastic tape to secure everything to the inside of the clear plastic umbrella.
