This homemade costume for groups entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest, and won 2nd place in the Best Group Costume nomination!

A word from Julie, the 'Alice in Wonderland' costume creator:

Tim Burton in 'Alice in Wonderland' said, "You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret: all the best people are." We had an adventuresome group of 10 friends, (5 married couples) that wanted a group theme where we could dress in disguise and have a little fun with the characters.

The total costume cost was $520 and over 100 hours was spent making the costumes. We shopped thrift stores and dollar stores and as well as our garages for materials. Hula hoops were used under the mushroom and for Tweedle Dee and Dum. Absolem's body was fleece stuffed with foam and plastic grocery bags. He had a latex nose, a monacle, and a hookah pipe. The Queen of Heart's crown was embellished with jewels and her collar needed to be heavily starched. Expanding foam and lightweight metal and hula hoops formed the round bodies for Tweedle Dee and Dum and then pants and shirts were made to fit around. The Cheshire Cat material and fur was sewn in strips for the striped effect. Rabbit pants were sewn with fur fabric and the vest was embellished with checkered fleece. His face had paper whiskers and cotton cheeks. Alice's pinafore had card suit symbols added. The tea tray set was an actual antique tea set attached to a tray. The Mad Hatter had an assortment of patches, scarves, and lace added, as well as uneven pants made from old curtains. His eyebrows were made using latex and wig hair. The card guards costumes were made from styrofoam insulation and masked and spray painted. They had checked leggings and head caps. Their weapons were made from plastic pipes and foam core.
