This homemade costume for babies entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Kathleen, the 'Wild Thing' costume creator:

My daughter is wearing the Wild Thing costume from the book, Where the Wild Things Are.

I used a McCalls pattern to cut the general shape of the bodice, and headpiece. After I cut the fleece, I sewed orange flannel stripes to the top half and sleeves, and then cut out scales for the legs out of felt. I sewed them onto the legs.

After sewing on stripes and scales, I sewed the body pieces together (inserting a furry tail I made from faux fur fabric) and then started working on the head. I trimmed the fur material so that it was less hairy for the head piece, and appliqued eyes and a nose onto the tan felt for the face. I made teeth and sewed them on the front in between the outside layer of hat and the silky inside. I put all the layers right sides together, sewed them, and then flipped them right side out, and stitched the bottom closed. I added hook clasps to under the chin.

Do you sell these costumes, they are amazing!!! I would love to purchase one for my 27 moth old son. Thank you so much

#2 comment by Kathleen June 28, 2013

Shirley, I am sorry I don't make them! They are very time consuming so I would have to charge an arm and a leg :/ But thank you for the compliment! I appreciate it!

Can you tell me what the mccalls pattern number was that you used for the bodice and head.I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

#4 comment by Kathleen August 15, 2013

Debbie, I used mccalls P209. It's a Tom Arma costume pattern with variations for a panda, elephant, lion, etc.

Do you remember about how much this cost you to make?

#10 comment by Kathleen August 3, 2014

No I don't, Jessica! I'm sorry!

Did you make the Max costume as well? If so can you let me know what pattern you used to make it, my son and daughter want to go as max and moshi this year, and it's time for me to start sewing.

I did make the Max costume for my son-- I can't remember and can't find the pattern. It was a McCall's pattern for a kids animal suit though. I think for a bear. I just used all white fur and made my own headpiece and crown.

Kathleen,

for the bodice and hat fabric did you use regular grey flannel? What was the lining? Also for the scales what color felt? Thanks so much for your help!

#14 comment by Kathleen August 18, 2014

I used te same color felt for the hat and scales-- I don't know the color; I just brought the book with me and tried to match it up. I bought some smooth shiny material for the lining.

Do you have a template for the face? It is amazing!

#16 comment by Kathleen September 26, 2014

No Cindy I'm sorry :( I just looked at the book and went for it :)

This is gorgeous! My 3 1/2 year old just decided he and his 16 month old sister should be Max and a wild thing for Halloween this year and I stumbled upon this while looking for inspiration :) Thanks for the info and tips. I can't wait to make one of my own!

I'm planning on making a monster costume, but how do you keep the hood up like that so that the eyes are visible and not laying flat on the head?

#21 comment by Kathleen October 6, 2014

Thanks Nathalie :)
Victoria, the headpiece is lightly stuffed, so it sticks out.

#22 comment by stacey October 14, 2014

How did you make your scales? Did you cut them individually or did you cut them in a string like fashion.

#23 comment by Kathleen October 15, 2014

I cut them individually.

#24 comment by Stacey October 15, 2014

Thank you!

#25 comment by Stacey October 31, 2014

HELP!! I know your probably doing things with your kiddos but how did you sew the fur on

#26 comment by Kathleen October 31, 2014

Onto the headpiece? I trimmed the fur near where I was sewing the pieces together so it didn't get caught in the machine.

#27 comment by Jenn October 31, 2014

I hand sewed mine on and it worked perfectly. Just my 2cents

#28 comment by Joseph November 27, 2014

I love it! Super creative!

#29 comment by Kathleen November 27, 2014

Thanks Joseph!

Do you remember which hood pattern you used. Did you have to alter pattern to achieve the height of the hood?

#31 comment by Kathleen Phillips September 14, 2017

Hi Marie, I'm not sure anymore the number pattern but it was a Tom Arma costume pattern that I modified.
